Bonnyville - Profile
Population: 5,500
Bonnyville is located 260 km. (150 miles) northeast of Edmonton.
Bonnyville was discovered 200 years ago by the Voyageurs of the North West Company. The beauty of the four distinct seasons offered by the area drew settlers and continues to do so today.
Bonnyville is set in an area of great natural beauty; an area dotted with lakes and forests, hence its claim to being the "heart of the Lakeland". The area is part of a transition zone between two major regions, the Boreal forest and the northern Parkland. As a result of its location, it contains characteristics of both and forms a complex mosaic which enhances wildlife use and productivity beyond that contained in either major region.
Built on the shores of Jessie Lake, Bonnyville is home to nearly two hundred varieties of shore and song birds as they make their annual migrations in the spring and fall. It is a bird watcher's paradise. Here you'll find the Great Blue Heron, Whooping Cranes, nine species of owls, ducks, gulls, and songbirds of all description. Follow the Wetland's Nature Trail along the lake and stop at the viewing platforms situated along the way.
Bonnyville's major annual events include: Winterfest (last weekend in February); a Pro Rodeo (first weekend in May); and the Bonnyville Tradex trade fair and carnival (third weekend in June).
