Edmonton - Profile

Population: Over 627,000

Edmonton is the capital city of Alberta. It has more parkland per capita than any other city in Canada. The beautiful river valley "band of green" parklands, which follows the North Saskatchewan River through the city, gives Edmonton many miles of hiking and biking trails which double as cross country ski trails in the winter.

A thoroughly modern city, with a multi-cultural heritage, Edmonton is know as Canada's Festival City. Over a period of 13 weeks in the summer, it hosts 9 festivals, such as The Works: A Visual Arts Celebration, the International Jazz Festival, the Fringe Theatre Event, and Heritage Days Festival.

History

In 1795, a fortified Hudson's Bay trading post called "Edmonton House" was established. Just under 100 years later, the trading post and surrounding settlement had evolved into the incorporation of Edmonton into a town. The population expanded again with the famous Klondike Gold Rush of 1897, as thousands of gold seekers stocked up on supplies on their final leg of the journey to the Yukon. Many returning gold seekers decided to settle in Edmonton, thus by the year 1904, Edmonton became incorporated as a city. The following year, Alberta joined the Confederation of Canada and Edmonton was named the capital city.

The 1947 discovery of oil in Leduc, just outside Edmonton, led to the title of "Oil Capital of Alberta", as Edmonton established itself as the hub for the petrochemical industry.

Edmonton earned the title "Gateway to the North", shipping medical supplies, food and other various items to the northern communities.

Edmonton and the surrounding area has many attractions which show its pride in the past: Fort Edmonton, the Provincial Museum, Rutherford House, the John Walter Museum, and the Ukrainian Cultural Heritage Village, to name a few.

Today, Edmonton is noted world-wide as the city with West Edmonton Mall. The world's largest mall, over 800 stores and services and five world-class attraction...Galaxy, World Waterpark, Deep Sea Adventure, Europa Golf and the Ice Palace.
