Jasper - Profile
Jasper National Park was established in 1907. In
1910, the Grand Trunk and Pacific Railway, which was
then under construction, selected as its divisional
point the present location of the Town of Jasper.
This new station was named Fitzhugh, and the townsite
which developed was surveyed and administered by the
Dominion Government. By 1914, the town had been
re-named Jasper, in honour of Jasper Hawes who in the
early nineteenth century had been a Northwest
Company clerk in this area.
Over the years, the Town of Jasper has enjoyed steady growth and now has over 4,000 permanent residents. It presently derives its prosperity from three main sources: the railroad, the National Park, and the private sector which provides for residents and tourists alike.
