Mayerthorpe (I-4) - Profile

Population: over 1,800

Mayerthorpe is located 80 miles (128 km) N.W. of Edmonton and 260 miles (418 km) N.W. of Calgary.

Leo O. Crockett, Sr., an early pioneer in the area, carried out the original survey of the townsite of Mayerthorpe. In 1919, he set up a general store and persuaded the first bank to establish an outlet. He later became the first Ford dealer in the area, as well as a well-known breeder of prize winning Percheron horses.

The developing townsite of Mayerthorpe took its name from Robert Mayer, the area's first postmaster.

Today, the agricultural base of the area is celebrated with its Agricultural Fair in early August. In early June, the town hosts the annual Mudfest. While in the area, be sure to visit the Paddle River Dam and view Mayerthorpe's downtown Murals.
